South Tyrolean cycling pleasure
The Brenner cycle route is one of the most popular cycle routes in South Tyrol - not only because of its impressive landscape, but also because of its ideal infrastructure. It runs for around 96 kilometres from the Brenner Pass (1,370 m) to the provincial capital of Bozen (262 m) - almost exclusively downhill and mostly on an asphalted cycle path separated from road traffic.

The route follows the old railway line and is therefore pleasantly flat and ideal for leisure cyclists, families and e-bikers. It runs along the historic Brenner railway line, past old viaducts, disused railway stations and through idyllic valleys.

  • Brenner - Sterzing (15 km) Gentle descent through the Wipptal valley
  • Sterzing - Franzensfeste - Brixen (35 km) With the imposing Franzensfeste fortress
  • Brixen - Klausen - Bozen (45 km) Through the Eisack valley, past vineyards to the South Tyrolean capital town

If you wish, you can also easily combine the route with the railway - the route runs parallel to the railway line and most trains have bike compartments.

Level of difficulty and equipment
Thanks to the continuous gradient, the route is technically easy to cycle, with only around +200 m / -1,100 m difference in altitude along the entire route. It is therefore also suitable for less trained cyclists. A trekking bike, city bike or e-bike is ideal.

  • Route length: approx. 96 km
  • Difference in altitude: approx. -1,100 m downhill
  • Riding time: approx. 5-6 hours depending on speed and breaks
  • Difficulty: easy
